Newton – his work formed the basis for mechanics. He also invented calculus (along with Leibniz). The world would not have advanced properly w/o his work.

I’m going to have to agree, Newton’s got to be greater in terms of contribution. In an era when nobody knew or cared about physics, Newton laid the foundations to concepts like gravity and motion without anybody even remotely thinking about these things. He introduced mechanics, following Galileo, and his contributions, while today we know aren’t entirely accurate, lead us to take a deeper look at our world and how it works. And yeah, he invented calculus (though some people will say that’s not a very good thing, especially those who hated math in high school).
Einstein was a genious as well. He revolutionized a lot of the basic concepts of physics using his relativity theory, and explained light in ways Newton never could. He took physics to a whole new level. As well, his stands on war, against nuclear arms, and promoting zionism, are quite great. My primary reason for saying Newton is more important is the fact that Einstein worked in a time where physics was a popular and advanced field, while Newton had to lay new tracks and foundations.
